Overview


The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa Subclass 482, also known as the Skills in Demand Visa, allows skilled workers to work in Australia for an approved employer who cannot find a suitably qualified Australian worker.

This visa provides a pathway to permanent residency (PR) for many occupations in demand especially through the Medium-Term and Labour Agreement Streams.


Visa Streams


🟩 Short-Term Stream

  • Valid up to 2 years (renewable once)

  • Occupation must be on the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL)

  • PR not available directly from this stream


🟦 Medium-Term Stream

  • Valid for up to 4 years

  • Occupation must be on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)

  • Provides a direct PR pathway through the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme


🟧 Labour Agreement Stream

  • For employers with a Labour Agreement approved by the government

  • Tailored for specific industries with skill shortages (e.g., hospitality, trade, care sectors)

  • Often includes PR transition options

Eligibility Requirements


To qualify for the Subclass 482 Visa, you must:

  1. Be sponsored by an approved employer

  2. Have an occupation listed on the relevant Skilled Occupation List

  3. Possess at least 2 years of work experience in your nominated occupation

  4. Meet English language requirements

  5. Hold necessary skills and qualifications

  6. Meet health and character standards


Application Process


  1. Employer applies for Sponsorship & Nomination approval

  2. Employee submits 482 visa application

  3. Complete health and character checks

  4. Wait for visa grant decision

  5. Begin work and accumulate PR-qualifying experience

Most 482 visa holders transition to Permanent Residency (PR) through:

  • Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) – after 2 years of full-time work

  • Regional PR (Subclass 191) – for regional sponsorships
